General description of the collection: The Louis E. Caldera Collection consists of speechwriters' files from the Office of the Secretary of the Army under Caldera and his immediate successor, Dr. Joseph W. Westphal, covering dates from December 1998 to June 1999, January to April 2000, and November 2000 to May 2001. Most of the speechwriters' files include correspondence, research materials, and drafts and final copies of speeches. Some files also contain personnel documents, photographs, news clippings, or programs. The files are arranged chronologically by date of the speech or message within fifteen boxes. Caldera's speeches include speeches at United States (U.S.) Army events, before veterans organizations, before Hispanic and Latin American organizations, and before Japanese-American organizations.

Louis Caldera served as the U.S. Secretary of the Army from 2 July 1998 to 20 January 2001. Caldera oversaw the expansion of educational opportunities in the U.S. Army, including the creation of the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, and the Institute for Creative Technologies, and the implementation of "GED-Plus-The Army's High School Completion Program." Efforts to improve U.S. Army recruiting and environmental stewardship were also made during Caldera's term as Secretary. ...
